The test, Hajdu says, is easier to perform, less invasive, and is easier to perform "with limited training."

Canada has now given he greenlight to rapid antigen tests for COVID-19.

Health Minister Patty Hajdu confirmed this morning that the rapid tests have been approved. The Abbott Rapid Diagnostics test, developed in Germany, can detect COVID-19 in under 20 minutes.

The test, Hajdu says, is easier to perform, less invasive, and is easier to perform "with limited training."

Canada had fallen behind in terms of testing technology, with the likes of Japan and the United States having given the go-ahead to the technology months ago.

The tests, while faster, are less accurate than the invasive PCR tests currently used in Canada, which delves deep into the nasal cavity to collect the virus' genetic material.

The new Abbott tests have been found to have an accuracy of closer to 95 percent for those having shown symptoms in the last week.
