The Trudeau government has determined that eight million masks made in China have failed to meet specifications for medical use.
According to CBC, the government has suspended shipments of N-95 masks from a Montreal-based supplier as a result.
"The office of Procurement Minister Anita Anand said Friday that of the nearly 11 million masks received from the distributor, about one million met federal standards and another 1.6 million masks are still being tested," CBC reports.
The government says that the eight million faulty masks are still being evaluated for other uses. The distributor has not been named and discussions continue regarding reimbursement.
According to CBC, the government has "contracts with several suppliers for a total of some 135.5 million masks."
"We are working with a range of suppliers and distributors, and we have strong processes in place to help ensure that the supplies we receive meet all necessary standards," a statement from Anand said.
