Trudeau's Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller announced yesterday that the federal government will spend $40 billion on welfare programs for Indigenous children.

Despite the cost of the program, Miller said that "we’re not done," reports Blacklock's Reporter.

"We reflect on thirty years of failure and discrimination towards Indigenous children and the child welfare system, denials of service. This is 30 years of the cost of failure and that cost is high," he added.

Trudeau government lawyers are currently negotiating with First Nation officials after losing a court battle. The cost of this loss could be as high as $15 billion.

When discussing the $40 billion figure, Miller said that the court settlement would only be a slim portion of the figure. "There’s two parts of [this figure]. Fixing the system for good so this does not happen again, and compensating children for thirty years of discrimination."

When a reporter asked how much of the figure was compensation, Miller elaborated further, saying "it’s roughly half and half."

"These discussions are things that are going to occur among the parties and I can’t go into any more detail on that," he added.

"There are issues of costing, there are issues of sorting out amongst the parties what that proper allotment of compensation is."
