Trudeau's newest Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu won't release a deadline for when the federal government will end boil-water advisories on reserves.
The minister put this down to "construction challenges [with] COVID [that] have made deadlines shift frequently."
During the recent election, the federal government vowed to end boil-water advisories. They also promised this during the 2015 Canadian election, yet 58 active advisories remain in over 30 indigenous communities.
Some progress has been made since 2015, yet the Trudeau government remains well behind schedule. Trudeau promised he would end this in five years when he first became prime minister.
Trudeau's former Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller said that "we walked into 105—as a government—105 long-term advisories with absolutely zero plan to get them lifted. Today, we've lifted 101 and there's a plan for every other community."
"Our commitment to lift all long-term drinking water advisories on public systems on reserve remains firm," he added.
Despite this, the government has suffered backlash for their delay. Warren Kinsella said on Twitter that Patty Hajdu was "incompetent" following the minister's comments.
"What a disgrace; what a farce," he said. "Six years in power, and this incompetent offers more 'consultation.'"
