The Trudeau Liberals are proposing new policies that would make popular streaming services adhere to rules and regulations not dissimilar to traditional broadcasters.
The bill, which will look to expand regulations in the Broadcasting Act and will be put forth by the Liberals today, will target streaming sites, such as Netflix and Spotify. Streaming services would fall under the new category called "online undertakings."
The bill would also give the CRTC the ability to ensure that streaming services provide financial "contributions" towards Canadian content.
According to Global News, a government briefing note shows that if the CRTC were to be given the proposed reach, a new $830 million worth of Canadian content could be created by 2023.
The briefing does not provide a definition as to what Canadian content is, and says that the CRTC may be tasked with doing so.
