People like to be a part of clubs, especially exclusive clubs. And that certainly is the case for Justin Trudeau and Bill Morneau.
They’re both in the club of well-connected elites who feel the rules don’t apply to them, while being absolutely certain that the rules DO apply to you and me, and that we should punished if we violate them.
Of course, when they violate the rules, they think there should be no punishment. In their view of things, rules are for those “below them.”
Trudeau and Morneau both see themselves as “rulers,” not as “servants,” and that elitist arrogance is clear for all to see. The distinction between rulers and servants is crucial.
Democracies are meant to ensure that the People are in control, that we decide, that we rule. Meanwhile, those we elect are supposed to be our employees. We rule over them, they serve us.
Inherently, those who we hire should be held to the highest possible standards, as they have a duty to us and to our country.
Yet, this has all been overturned, reversed, flipped upside-down. The people are no longer treated like rulers. We are treated like subjects.
And just like subjects, we find that our “leaders” exempt themselves from the rules, while never hesitating to punish us for our “transgressions.” That kind of attitude leads to exactly what we are seeing now with the Trudeau WE Charity Scandal.
Both Trudeau and Morneau have family ties to WE, and seemingly a clear personal interest in WE being well-funded. And yet, they felt no need whatsoever to disclose that, no need to recuse themselves, no need to admit their family ties, and no need to admit the obvious conflict of interest.
Instead, they simply assumed that they could use their power to direct our taxpayer dollars towards an organization they were personally connected to, and then tried dissembling and distracting to avoid any accountability.
As a result, they find themselves in an even more exclusive club: Being investigated by the Ethics Commissioner (Trudeau visits that club often).
And this corruption goes even deeper.
Even if found guilty by the Ethics Commissioner, Trudeau and Morneau face minimal punishment, a result of the fact that the politicians get to set their own punishments.
Again, if the people were truly in charge, and if our politicians were servants, we wouldn’t let them control their own punishments. We would ensure that they are held accountable for wrongdoing, just like the rest of us would be.
And so, as long as the system continues to protect the corrupt, as long as people like Trudeau and Morneau see themselves as above the rest of us, and as long as MPs are complicit in this arrogance and elitism, those in power will continue trying to get away with whatever they can with total impunity.
