Trudeau says not to travel while Foreign Minister travels to UK

Many Canadian are crying hypocrisy as Foreign Minister Marc Garneau is currently in London while Trudeau and Dr. Tam urge Canadians not to travel. Garneau's trip is part of a G7 Foreign and Development Ministers conference being hosted in London by the United Kingdom.

According to the Canadian High Commission in London, Garneau is in London t0 discuss "pressing international issues, incl. COVID-19, climate change, human rights, gender equality and the promotion of democracy." The meetings have been long planned ahead of the G7 summit in England in June.

British PM Boris Johnson has been forced to defend the choice of hosting the meetings in person after multiple members of the India delegation have tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday. The Indian Foreign Minister said in a tweet, "As a measure of abundant caution and also out of consideration for others, I decided to conduct my engagements in the virtual mode. That will be the case with the G7 Meeting today as well."

This is not the first time Trudeau has been called a hypocrite for the behaviour of Liberal politicians during the pandemic. Last Spring Trudeau was heavily criticized for staying at his cottage in Quebec while explicitly telling others from Ontario not to do the same. Trudeau also attended a large protest in Ottawa last summer where social distancing and masks were not observed.
