Chrystia Freeland says that the Canadian government is prepared to provide help to Canadians living in the United States in the event of a post-election disruption, CTV News reports.

According to Freeland, while it is ultimately up to Americans to decide who will lead their country over the next four years, it is the responsibility of the Canadian government to provide support for its citizens across the world, including the United States.

Some election observers have noted the potential for violence following the results of the election. Businesses in many major cities across the United States have been advised by law enforcement to board up their windows in case of rioting resulting from the outcome.

Such concerns have been heightened since the United States saw a summer of political violence involving rioting, looting, and murders this year.

Others have noted, however, that it is unlikely that the world will see the results of the contentious US election tonight due to the high levels of mail-in voting. It is expected that in some states the full results could take days or weeks to confirm.

Freeland said that no matter what the results of the election are, the Canadian government will be prepared to respond.
