In a bid to obtrude Canadian media into streaming services and social platforms, Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault will introduce a bill that regulates their content.

Guilbeault told Global that the bill will be introduced at the next house sitting and will address concerns about Canadian content in new media services.

Guilbeault says platforms like Amazon Prime and Spotify don't have the same rules as domestic companies and that international social media giants like Facebook are making money off of Canadian news.

The Heritage Minister's plan is to use the CRTC to "ask" the companies to include more Canadian content. What "asking" means is anyone's guess, but currently the CRTC can regulate through fines and penalties.

"We're going to put some fairness into the Canadian regulatory system" Guilbeault told Mercedes Stephenson.

Guilbeault also has plans to regulate the way news is received on websites like Facebook. He cites a system Australia and New Zealand are looking into that will make tech giants such as Facebook pay domestic media companies for every post that contains the company's content.

Guilbeault has not hid his desires to regulate media in the past, back in February he recommended that the Trudeau government should force news outlets, like The Post Millennial, to register with the government.
