In a joint statement released by the United States, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates today, it was announced that the UAE and Israel have agreed to establish full diplomatic ties. This comes as a part of a deal to halt the annexation of occupied land sought by the Palestinians for their desired future state.
Trump has been instrumental in deescalating global conflicts on the Korean peninsula and the Middle East, and adds the beginning of these UAE/Israel ties to his diplomatic wins.
The agreement was reached with the help of US mediators, Jared Kushner, senior advisor and son-in-law to President Trump, US ambassador to Israel David Friedman, and special Mideast envoy Avi Berkowitz.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has touted his government's new, closer ties to Arab nations as he attempts to find solutions to many issues in the region. This announcement also proves to be another victory for the UAE's rulers who have worked towards projecting a position of openness and tolerance of Israel in contrast to neighbouring Gulf Arab states.
Palestinian leaders have told Arab states to refuse normalization with Israel but this deal halts Israeli annexation plans into Palestinian claimed areas. Besides the UAE, the only Arab nations that have active diplomatic ties to Israel are Egypt and Jordan.
This announcement comes at a time when relations in general have eased due to the prevalence of common terrorist groups in the area and the joint efforts to destroy them. The Associated Press reports that Israel will take part in the delayed UAE Expo 2020, a world fair hosted in Dubai next year. The announcement also follows UAE's announcement of plans to build the Abrahamic Family House in Abu Dhabi, a community complex that will contain a church, mosque and synagogue.
