Progressive Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-D), furthered her pressure campaign on Twitter Friday towards President Joe Biden to forgive student loan debt. Despite comments showing distaste for the proposed $50,000 student-loan forgiveness plan, Representative Jayapal stood by her remarks.
"I want to hear from you," she wrote on Twitter. "How would cancelling $50,000 of student loan debt help you and your family?"
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Representative Ayanna Presley (D-MA) urged President Biden to use his executive authority to cancel up to $50,000 of federal student loan debt.
Although there were comments on Representative Jayapal’s tweet in support of the remarkably high student loan forgiveness, many comments showed distaste.
"It’s a slap in the face to those of us who either paid off student debt or chose not to attend college," one user wrote. "Debt forgiveness of any kind removes personal responsibility."
Another user added, "Happily paying mine off because I’m a responsible adult accountable for my debt obligations. Be adults, people. No one should be paying a penny of your college loan debt."
The comments blasting Representative Pramila Jayapal continued as users acknowledged the unfairness towards those who have already paid off their student loans or never attended higher education, asking the representative what can be done for them.
"I don't have any student debt so I better get $50,000 in cash, tax free," a user commented on the thread while another added, "Exactly! I want reimbursement for what I had to pay toward college. Those in favor are strictly benefitting from timing- while others are getting screwed."
During a White House press briefing on Thursday, Press Secretary Jen Psaki reiterated President Biden’s intended course of action to approve a $10,000 student loan forgiveness plan, despite continuous pressure to use executive action to bypass Republicans in Congress and pass the proposed $50,000.
Even after garnering backlash in her original tweet, Representative Jayapal continued her pressure campaign towards the President, writing in a tweet the next day, "Yesterday, I asked how cancelling $50,000 of student loan debt would help you. I’ve already heard from more than 10,000 people because this is something that would make a real difference in the lives of so many."
She added, "President Biden can and should act to cancel student loan debt now."
