Two security guards have been charged after an alleged physical interaction with a patient at the Toronto General Hospital that led to her death.
According to a statement released by the Toronto Police Service, the patient, identified as Danielle Stephanie Warriner, 43, of Toronto. went into medical distress during the incident with the two guards.
"The patient was later pronounced deceased at Toronto Western Hospital on Wednesday, May 27, 2020," the statement reads.
Amanda Rojas-Silva, 42, of Stouffville, and Shane Hutley, 35, of Brougham, have been arrested and charged with manslaughter and criminal negligence causing death.
"I'm gutted, I'm heartbroken but I'm validated," said Warriner's sister, Denise, to CTV News Toronto on Tuesday. "This is, it doesn't feel good but at the same time, it is an acknowledgement that there was senseless death, a preventable death."
"She suffered a deprivation of oxygen which then as a result she went into cardiac arrest, and of course then sustained deprivation of oxygen to her brain, she had a brain injury," Warinner said.
"One of the most painful things I could ever imagine in my life is to make the decision to remove my sister from life support."
Rojas-Silva and Hutley are scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall on Tuesday, December 15, 2020.
The investigation remains ongoing.
