On Tuesday, two men from Scotland were arrested by counter-terrorism officers in Dover while attempting to leave the United Kingdom.

A 44-year-old man from Glasgow and a 40-year-old from Clydebank were taken into detainment on suspicion of preparing acts of terrorism, and the vehicle the men were in was searched by authorities, according to the BBC.

Counter Terrorism Policing South East said a vehicle and several digital devices were seized in the search.

"Searches of properties in Glasgow and Clydebank have taken place. The men have been bailed pending further inquiries," wrote the BBC.

The arrest comes just weeks after the UK government set the country's terrorist threat level to "severe."

A "severe" threat level means an attack is "highly likely."

The change in threat level comes after two attacks in the UK.

On November 15, a taxi exploded outside Liverpool's Women's Hospital, killing the passenger and injuring the driver.

On October 15, Conservative MP for Southend West Sir David Amess was fatally stabbed during a constituency meeting.

According to The Scotsman, "Ali Harbi Ali, 25, is accused of murdering the MP and has also been charged with preparing acts of terrorism between May 1, 2019 and September 28 this year."

Despite the rise in threat level, Assistant Chief Constable of Police Scotland, Mark Williams, said: "While the terrorist threat in the UK is diverse, volatile and complex, I would stress at this time there is nothing to suggest there is any specific threat to Scotland."

"I do want to take this opportunity to remind the public not to be alarmed, but to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to Police Scotland," he continued.
