Only weeks after the University of British Columbia “distanced” itself from a basketball coach who dared to like a video criticizing Black Lives Matter on social media, UBC has now excommunicated the Chair of their Board of Governors. Chair Michael Korenberg announced his resignation Saturday night after it was revealed he, too, had liked a number of tweets opposing the Black Lives Matter movement.

The tweets were brought into question by the group UBC Students Against Bigotry, and they executed the cancel campaign against Korenberg as well. UBC Students Against Bigotry is a student led organization best known for ANTIFA style behaviour. This behaviour includes doxing, stalking, and harassing. This group was heavily involved in the cancellation of an Andy Ngo talk at UBC as well.

The Free Speech Club, of which I am executive director, is currently suing UBC with the help of the Justice Centre For Constitutional Freedoms in regard to the University's recent acquiescence to these violent groups and the promotion of cancel culture.

In the statement released on Saturday evening, Korenberg states he is stepping down effective immediately.

“Over the last two weeks some articles/statements that I ‘liked’ on Twitter supported regressive voices and took aim at thousands of brave individuals standing up against racism, discrimination and hatred,” he said in a statement.

“While I do not support violence of any kind, I understand how my actions created questions about who I am and what I believed in.”

Upon his dismissal, the board of Governors also made a statement.

“The Board of Governors and Mr. Korenberg would like to recognize that this has been deeply hurtful to members of our community and that UBC has zero tolerance for racism and recognizes that real harm is created from both overt and structural racism.”

Upon Korenbergs’ resignation, Students Against Bigotry immediately celebrated and received sentiments as seen below.

The student activists have stated that their campaign will not end with Korenberg. Dr. Santa Ono, President of UBC, appears to be next on the next target of the cancellation streak. The “cancel culture” trend is not new, but appears to have ramped up following the rising racial tensions in the US. Multiple television shows, and books have been cancelled in the past month.

Korenberg was previously an adjunct professor at the Peter A. Allard School of Law between 1991 and 2014. He has served on the Board of Governors since 2016 and was elected chair in 2018.
