Despite being excommunicated by the woke mob, Louis C.K. and Dave Chappelle have both been nominated for Grammy's this year. The Recording Academy announced the nominations for 64th annual Grammy awards and included both comedians as honorees.
In the case of Dave Chappelle, the comedian recently was targeted by trans activists, following the debut of his special The Closer. In the special, Chappelle labels himself as a TERF or trans-exclusionary reactionary feminist. Additionally, trans activists found a number of his jokes to be transphobic and have labelled the comedian as a bigot.
Nonetheless, Chappelle has been nominated for “Best Spoken Word Album” for his Netflix special 8:46, a comedy set he delivered immediately following George Floyd’s death.
Louis C.K. was a prominent figure in the #MeToo movement, due to younger female comedians accusing C.K. of masturbating in front of this. This is despite the fact that they allegedly consented to him doing so. C.K.'s cancellation led to the comedian going dark for a few years until he returned to independently debut his new comedy special, Sincerely Louis CK.
The special was well received and has now earned a “Best Comedy Album" nomination. The rest of the category includes offerings from Chelsea Handler, Lewis Black and Kevin Hart.
According to The Wrap, Grammys CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said the Recording Academy does not “look back at people’s history” when considering nominations, but noted not all nominee's was invited to the event.
“We won’t restrict the people who can submit their material for consideration,” Mason said, “We won’t look back at people’s history, we won’t look at their criminal record, we won’t look at anything other than the legality within our rules of, is this recording for this work eligible based on date and other criteria. If it is, they can submit for consideration.”
"What we will control is our stages, our shows, our events, our red carpets. We’ll take a look at anyone who is asking to be a part of that, asking to be in attendance, and we’ll make our decisions at that point," Mason continued. "But we’re not going to be in the business of restricting people from submitting their work for our voters to decide on."
The 2022 Grammys are scheduled to air on January 31, on CBS.
