Canadians in Kabul have received emails from Global Affairs Canada on Thursday, telling them that the Canadian evacuation effort from Afghanistan has officially ended.
Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents have since been advised to shelter in place, with the Trudeau Liberals keeping a close eye on the situation.
"Canada's evacuation operations have now ended. At this time, no further Canadian evacuation flights are being planned," the email states.
'Please note that we will continue to closely monitor the situation in order to determine what options may become available, now that Canadian military evacuation flights have ended.
"The Government of Canada recognizes that there are a number of Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents who are still in Afghanistan. Until such time as the security situation stabilizes, the Government of Canada is urging Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents to shelter in place. Be mindful of the security environment and where possible take the necessary steps to ensure your security and that of your family."
The Canadian Press reports that acting chief of defense Gen. Wayne Eyre said that Canadians were among the last groups to leave, with Canada evacuating 3,700 people from Afghanistan.
"The conditions our armed forces members working under were unlike anything we've seen in decades, even during our previous mission in Afghanistan," said Eyre.
"They've witnessed horrific things. They've faced incredible dangers. And the feeling of helplessness and guilt that arises from having to leave people behind can be overwhelming."
It is still not exactly clear how many Canadians remain in Afghanistan.
