During Tuesday morning's episode of NBC's "Today show," unmasked NBC hosts were seen chuckling while discussing masking options for children returning to school after the winter holidays.

"Hey Vic, the kids are back in classroom, at least the overwhelming majority of them," host Craig Melvin said which a chuckle. "What's the recommendation for our youngest learners?"

NBC correspondent Vicky Nguyen discussed recommendations  from NBC News medical correspondent Dr. John Torres, who said N95 or KN95 masks were the most ideal and produced the most protection.

"But it can be really hard to find them in small, kids sizes, and also to keep them on your kids all day, they're not the most comfortable," said Nguyen.

So the "second best option" recommended is the combination of a kids size surgical mask covered by a cloth mask. The next best option after that is a surgical mask alone, and the worst option in just a cloth mask.

Recently, a doctor told CNN that cloth masks would be best effective if they have two or three layers.

"Well, I think cloth masks that are thick, two and three layers, continue to provide good protection," said Dr. William Schaffner.
