Ontario Premier Doug Ford addressed media Wednesday, alongside Education Minister Stephen Lecce and Health Minister Christine Elliott.
The government has formally requested that education workers, including teachers, who are not teaching online, volunteer at hospitals in non-medical positions, such as maintenance, food preparation, child care, social work, and educational assistance, and woman's shelters.

The request comes after the Ontario government passed emergency orders to allow educational workers to volunteer in such facilities.
"I want to thank our incredible education workers for their leadership... You're setting a great example for others to follow," said Ford.
Ford said that those who volunteer would be trained for the positions they fill, and said that those who volunteer would also receive compensation, as well as emergency child care.
Lecce went on to say that teachers volunteering is not indicative of whether or not schools would reopen in June.
Schools across Ontario have had their doors shut since March due, with the premier stating that further announcement will be made "early next week" on whether they will reopen this school year.
