The US Departments of Defense and Justice have, as of Wednesday, lifted mask requirements for about 20,000 of their employees, both military and civilian.
The mask mandate lifted was an indoor one, and will apply to the facilities of the two departments in and around the area of Washington DC, the nation's capital, as per the announcement made jointly by the two agencies on Monday.
According to Reuters, "other agencies are expected to follow suit this week." Also, along with stopping the mask mandate, the departments will now start to implement "a phased increase in onsite presence, over the next two months."
The agencies appear to have felt it was time to drop the mandates, since rates of transmission and current caseloads have dropped significantly in the recent past. Right now more than 70 percent of US territory is listed as having "low or "medium" levels of COVID cases.
Congress dropped their indoor mask mandate on Sunday, two days before the State of the Union address by President Biden took place.
A similar lifting of the mask requirements happened in the White House on Tuesday. However, the measures only apply to fully vaccinated individuals, and proof of vaccination will still be required in all applicable cases. COVID testing on employees will also continue to take place as it was before.
