Virginia Democrats voted on Tuesday to reject an immigrant mom and education activist from the state Board of Education after accusing her of aligning with "white supremacy," as well as condemning her criticism of socialism and promotion of the US Constitution.

In a 22-18 vote, the Democrats unanimously killed Suparna Dutta's nomination to the Virginia Board of Education by Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, reported independent journalist Asra Nomani.

According to Nomani, Dutta, who co-founded the Coalition for TJ, a group fighting against anti-Asian discriminatory admissions policies at Fairfax County Public Schools' Thomas Jefferson High School, has been a victim of "character assassination" at the hands of the left-wing board members.

As Nomani reported on her Substack blog, fellow Indian immigrant Dutta went "toe-to-toe" with board member Anne Holton, who is married to Democratic senator and former running mate of Hillary Clinton, Tim Kaine. During the exchange, Dutta was shamed for her praise of founding US documents.

"You cannot reference the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution as 'remarkable documents'... I just, I can't, I'm not comfortable with that language," Holton said during the Tuesday board meeting of Dutta's stated opinions.

"I'm not comfortable with the language of 'centralized government planning in the form of socialism or communist political systems is incompatible with democracy,'" she continued, arguing against Dutta's pro-liberty ideology. "I would concede on communism, but there are plenty of governments that call themselves socialist-democratic' governments!"

"So, is socialism compatible with democracy?" Holton posed sarcastically. "That would be a great debate to have in a twelfth-grade government civics class. It would not be something I would want to take a stand on, that socialism is 'incompatible' with democracy in this document here."

Dutta defended herself, arguing that it is "hideous" and "abominable" for a person to be considered anything other than an individual.

"I come from a country which used to be more socialistic than it is now, but it creates dependency and depression," the mom fired back, adding that people may use socialism as a "euphemism," but that the government becomes "too dumb to govern itself."

According to Nomani, Holton and the rest of Virginia Democrats launched a "character assassination campaign" against Dutta, a "moderate immigrant mom of color from India." The writer shared screenshots of the state's left-wing education activists labeling the mother as a "far-right extremist."

She also reported that it was state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi who accused Dutta of aligning with “white supremacists" before they voted her out.

"This is the new Southern Democrats — mimicking the bigotry of their predecessors," Nomani wrote of the strategies employed by the left-wing board members.

"What was Suparna's crime? Being an American Hindu," she added, going on to say that "As a Muslim reformer and feminist, the character assassination campaign against Suparna Dutta is unconscionable and un-American."

According to the journalist, those who opposed Dutta's membership to the board were the same people who opposed her advocacy for merit-based admissions to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.

"This is the defamatory campaign they are waging against a woman of color, calling her a 'right-wing extremist,' when she is like many immigrant parents, seeking equality and fairness in America and its educational system," Nomani argued.

In a statement condemning his appointee's ouster, Gov. Youngkin called the Democrats' actions "shameful."

"They voted to remove Suparna Dutta, shockingly claiming that a public school parent isn't qualified to serve on the Board of Education. She is a mother and advocate for parents' rights, she is an immigrant and an advocate for Asian American rights, she is an engineer and advocate for STEM in education. She is not only qualified, she epitomizes parental involvement in our schools and we need her voice on our Board of Education," the governor said.

Youngkin continued: "Democrats are repeating loudly their clear beliefs: parents don't matter, criminals first, victims last, and petty politics above Virginia's best interests. It's shameful. Virginians deserve so much better.”

Coalition for TJ also released a statement, saying that the Democrats "ceded to a character assassination campaign against an immigrant woman of color."
