Vice President Kamala Harris told Axios in an interview released Sunday that there was no national strategy in place to vaccinate the US against the coronavirus, contradicting previous statements of Dr. Anthony Fauci.
"The challenge is what I explained to the mayors, there was no stockpile [of vaccines],... There was no national strategy or plan for vaccinations, we were leaving it to the states and local leaders to try to figure it out," Harris explained.
"In many ways we are starting from scratch on something that's been raging for almost an entire year," she continued.
Last month Dr, Anthony Fauci said specifically that the country was "not starting from scratch" in relation to vaccine distribution.
"We're certainly not starting from scratch, because there is activity going on in the distribution," Fauci told reporters in the White House, The Hill reported. Fauci said that the Trump administration left behind a blueprint for distributing vaccines nationwide, that the Biden administration can build on.
"We're coming in with fresh ideas, but also some ideas that were not bad ideas with the previous administration. You can't say it was absolutely not usable at all," Fauci explained.
