WATCH: Expert warns that parental rights are under threat by state-enforced gender ideology

Speaking to Fox News' Laura Ingraham on Wednesday, author and attorney Abigail Shrier discussed the problems of overreach into parental rights. It's coming in the US, she said, and brought a horrifying example of this from Canada.

"In Canada, we see where this could all be headed," Ingraham said, The Post Millennial is reporting that a warrant was issued by a judge for the arrest of a father after calling his biological female child his daughter... He was found to be in contempt of court."

"This is one of the most shocking stories I've read, lately," Ingraham then said, talking about a California law that ensures that minors can obtain access to medical gender transition services, including cross-sex hormones and surgery.

"Abigail, you're something of an expert in this," Ingraham said, asking "what do Americans need to know about the power of some of these state governments to take kids away from parents or undermine their values?"

Shrier said that she found that kids in Washington state, if doctors and the parents are on board with a child's gender transition, the state will offer support. But if a parent wants to wait and see, or do something other than assume their child is 100 percent sure that they want to swap genders, "then the state seems to put its thumb on the scale and it can very quickly escalate to a threat to the parents' custody."

Ingraham noted that kids "can't get on a plane without a note from their parents, but they can do this?"

"Look at the laws in the state of Washington," Shrier said, "a child aged 13 and up has total control over inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment and they have total privacy rights to that mental health care, so parents are not entitled to know about it. And health workers and insurance companies are directly barred by law from disclosing that mental health treatment, gender affirming treatment, to the parents. And that can include anything affirming someone's pronouns to their hormone treatment and surgeries."

Ingraham posited that many Democrat parents would be okay with this kind of thing in the US, but Shrier said that in fact, many of the parents that seek her out to get help for their families and their children are left-leaning.

"Most of the parents who call me are politically progressive," Shrier said. "The problem is that they were a little naive about... allowing social workers speak to alone with their kids, and sometimes social workers will show up to the school, so parents won't find out about it until after the fact and that can quickly start a scenario that very quickly escalates to a threat to the parents' custody."
