Bears are not uncommon in northern Ontario but this weekend, a black bear cub was spotted with a red bucket stuck on its head, according to the Toronto Sun.
One of the witnesses, Trevor Buchmann spotted the bear west of Kirkland Lake by roughly 15 kilometres.
The bear climbed a tree and proceeded to get stuck in it while the bucket was still on its head.
The bear was first seen with the bucket on its head on July 15, not far from a dump. Buchmann believes the cub was abandoned by its mother after she wasn’t able to remove the pale.
"The cub likely picked it up at the dump," he noted Monday, "and worked his way through the bush. We think it may have been the container for protein powder."
"We’d heard reports since then about this bear cub," he said. “(Sunday), we were doing some work on our guest cottage and my daughter was sitting on the deck and she said, 'What’s that on the tree?' I thought it might be a fisher or marten or even a cat, and I looked over and saw the big red bucket on its head."
"I ran to get into long-sleeve clothing and I tried to grab it and it went further up the tree. I went to the shop to get a pole I could use to loop around the bucket."
A friend of Buchmann’s named Elder arrived and attempted to climb the tree to reach the bear but it climbed up to the top. The incident was filmed by Buchmann and his family and was shared on Facebook.
The video shows Elder use a pole to gently push the cub into the lake. Buchmann was then able to bring the bear onto land where the two men are able to remove the bucket using a blanket.
The bear cub was placed in a dog kennel and the men are able to feed it fruit.
The men reportedly received step-by-step instructions from Elder’s aunt who is a veterinarian and has rescued bears in the past.
The men called the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and the bear was brought to the Huntsville Bear With Us rescue centre. It will spend the fall and winter at the centre and be released in the spring.
