As he signed executive orders today to freeze new oil and gas drilling leases on federal land, President Joe Biden called for the US to be a leader in the fight against the climate change crisis, as he and Vice President Kamala Harris have termed it.

"It's not time for small measures," Biden said, "we need to be bold. So let me be clear. That includes revitalizing the economies of coal, oil and gas and power plant communities. We have to start by creating new, good paying jobs, capping those abandoned wells. Reclaiming mines. Turning old brown field sites into new hubs of economic growth.

"Creating new good paying jobs in those communities where those workers live because they helped build this country. We're never gonna forget the men and women who dug the coal and built the nation. We're gonna do right by them," Biden said.

"Make sure they have opportunities to keep building the nation in their own communities, and getting paid well for it, while the whole of government approach is necessary though it's not sufficient.

"We're gonna work with mayors and governors and tribal leaders and business leaders," Biden said, "who are stepping up. And the young people who are stepping up and organizing and leading the way.

"My message to those young people is you have the full capacity and power of the federal government. Your government is gonna work with you."

Earlier today, John Kerry, the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, said that oil and gas workers who are put out of work by Biden's executive orders mandating the closure of the fossil fuel industry by federal fiat, can find new jobs building solar panels.

Kerry said that, with regard to those workers who are affected by the climate change "crisis," "...no two people in this room are more concerned about it, and the President of the United States has expressed in every comment he has made about climate the need to grow the new jobs that pay better, that are cleaner."
