Michael Shellenberger, who is running to unseat Gavin Newsom as Governor of California, called out the Democrat, as well as other progressive officials, during an interview with Fox News, for causing much of the violence on the streets due to their soft-on-crime policies.
The segment began with the Los Angeles County Sheriff, Alex Villanueva, denying that they were "ok with the lightweight sentencing" in a recent hit-and-run incident in Venice, saying that they were "never consulted" on the issue, and would "never be ok with this sentencing."
Following the interview, Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon's office later issued a correction and walked back his claim that the sheriff's department "agreed with the felony charges" and lenient sentencing against the teenager who was convicted of driving a car into a mother and her 8-month-old son.
Shellenberger first mentioned that the prison population in the state of California has already been summarily reduced by almost 30 percent, and Newsom "now says he wants to release an additional 76,000 ... 63,000 of them are in prison for violent offenses."
"They said that they were going to do rehabilitation. That was always my understanding ... but that's not what's happening in these cities, or at the state level."
Mentioning a possible connection with a very large donor to progressive candidates he continued: "Governor Gavin Newsom said he was going to consider closing one prison three years ago. Now he says he's going to shut down three prisons. I don't think it's a coincidence he received $1 million from George Soros to fight the recall last fall."
"It sounds like a conspiracy theory, but George Soros is the biggest donor of these radical-left District Attorneys, and of Gavin Newsom."
".... That's why you see a crisis of chaos, the open-air drug markets, the fentanyl deaths. The people of California, we are very liberal, but we do have our limits, and we want to see law and order in the cities and the state."
Shellenberger then predicted that both Gascon and San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin are going to be voted out sooner than later, at the first opportunity the public has to do so.
Shellenberger continued, "I think it's not a coincidence that the people that ... say they hate America, are advocating for policies that reduce any penalties whatsoever for people that commit extremely violent crimes."
