Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), took to the Senate floor on Wednesday to compare the storming of the US Capitol Building to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which kicked off American military involvement in World War II.

"President Franklin Roosevelt set aside December 7, 1941 as a day that will live in infamy," Schumer said. "Unfortunately, we can now add January 6, 2021 to that very short list of dates in American history that will live forever in infamy."

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor killed 2,335 military personnel and 68 civilians, and wounded 1,177. It ultimately forced the United States to join the Allies in World War II, during which, over 400,000 Americans were killed.

Pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol Building in Washington DC on Wednesday to protest against the ongoing certification of the election results in a joint session of Congress. Rioters forced themselves past security and wandered around the building unimpeded until the National Guard arrived to restore order.

One person was killed by police during the Wednesday riot.

Schumer further described the US Capitol Building as a "temple to democracy" which was "desecrated," blasting rioters for smashing windows and vandalizing offices. He also noted that the legislators present were forced to flee "because they were in harm's way."
