Speaking to Mark Steyn on Fox News Tuesday night, journalist, author, and scientist Dr. Debra Soh addressed what she believes is America's biggest export: identity politics.
"America's made some seriously alarming products," Steyn said, "but it turns out our worst export isn't Cardi B, predator drones or even cranch... our worst export is apparently our wokeness. And this distinctly American brand of social justice is apparently so bad even the French are getting worried about it.
"This week French politicians, including President Macron, warned of the dangers of the American left as imported from the United States," Steyn said, showing a clip of a headline from The New York Times.
It read: "Will American ideas tear France apart? Some of its leaders think so." The quote from Macron states "The threat? 'Certain social theories entirely imported from the United States."
"I would say yes, woke-ism is a serious problem," Dr. Soh said when asked if the French have reason to be concerned. "This is affecting people in every area of life now. It doesn't matter where you work, it doesn't matter what your hobbies are, it doesn't matter where you live in the world now, woke-ism and identity politics and social justice really are infringing on our ability to live freely."
When asked if critical social justice will reach all around the world rather than being contained in the Anglosphere, Soh said "they're gonna be catching up."
"There is no real place where you can escape from this," Soh continued. "Coming from academia, I never thought that this would be affecting the sciences, but now you actually see scientific papers coming out that are definitely influenced by this ideology, and if this is something that is being taught to young children, especially school children, in education, in the curriculum, this is going to be affecting generations to come."
Steyn asked Soh if the spread and enforcement of critical social justice is comparable to the book 1984, to which Soh replied that "I think, right now, people are aware that the things that they have to say are not true, but I worry because as this is trickling down to younger generations... they're not gonna know any better."
She noted that critical gender ideology, for example, is being taught to kindergarteners in the United States, arguing that such teachings will obstruct the ability of younger generations to think critically about these ideas and examine the factual inaccuracies.
Former President Donald Trump took steps to root out critical social justice from American institutions by instituting an executive order in the final months of his presidency banning federal agencies from implementing its teachings within their work environments and prohibiting the federal government from working with firms which do so. The executive order was revoked by President Joe Biden.
