WATCH: Dr. Fauci says there is 'no reason why' voting should not be done in person

In an interview with National Geographic, Dr. Anthony Fauci revealed that he does not believe that in-person voting in the US come November would be a health and safety issue if the right steps are taken to protect Americans.

"I think, that if carefully done according to the guidelines, there's no reason why [voting in person] would not be the case," said Fauci.

"When you look at going to a grocery store... those that are doing it correctly, they have X's every six or more feet, and it says 'don't leave this spot until the person in front of you left their spot.' And you can do that. If you go and wear a mask and observe the physical distancing... there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to do that," said Fauci, still urging those who are immuno-compromised to vote by mail-in ballot.

The question comes after months of speculation as to whether or not there will be in-person voting. Previously, President Donald Trump tweeted that mail-in voting could lead to the "most inaccurate and fraudulent election in history."

"It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???"

Trump has been denouncing the use of mail-in voting for months as the idea has been brought forward by health officials and government officials to avoid further spread of the virus. Concerns have been raised about changing voting procedure this close to the election.

Speaking to Sean Hannity on Fox last night, Attorney General William Barr said that it is entirely irresponsible for the country to switch to mail-in voting this close to the election. To do so, Barr posits, would be to create a situation where the results of the election are called into question.

If the election date is delayed as Trump is suggesting, it would require changing federal law which would have to be put through the Republican-controlled Senate but also the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives.
