"We need to shut them down here in Massachusetts and we need to shut them down all around the country. You should not be able to torture a pregnant person like that."

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) sounded off on pregnancy resource centers on Tuesday, referring to the services they provide as a form of "torture." These are health clinics that help women maintain their pregnancies.

"In Massachusetts right now, the crisis pregnancy centers are there to fool people who are looking for pregnancy termination help outnumber true abortion clinics by 3:1. We need to shut them down here in Massachusetts and we need to shut them down all around the country. You should not be able to torture a pregnant person like that."

In response to Warren’s claims, The Family Resource Council started a petition and has urged her to "stop going after pregnancy resource centers."

The petition described an array of valuable services and accomplishments of pregnancy resource centers, such as "serv[ing] almost two million people a year and provid[ing] nearly $270 million in services at virtually no charge."

"Many provide medical care, parenting classes, assistance with financial programs, assistance to victims of human trafficking, housing, counseling, and much more," the petition reads.

Additionally, the petition stated that "there have been at least 92 acts of violence over the last two months," citing a document of incidents the Family Resource Council compiled detailing "the recent wave of violence and vandalism against pro-life churches and PRCs."

These attacks on pregnancy resource centers do not comport with the sentiments of most Americans, as per a report from the Charlotte Lozier Institute indicating that "an overwhelming majority of Americans, regardless of whether they self-identify as 'pro-life' or 'pro-choice,' consider pregnancy centers a valuable community resource."

Pregnancy resource centers offer assistance to women seeking an alternative to abortion. Warren has been calling for the government to crack down on crisis pregnancy centers since the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
