Florida Governor Ron DeSantis clashed with a CNN reporter on Monday after being asked a question about coronavirus.
The CNN reporter asked DeSantis "what went wrong with the rollout of the vaccine" given that Florida has seen "websites crash and senior citizens waiting overnight for the vaccine?"
"We distributed vaccines to hospitals and the hospitals said first come first serve, if you show up, we'll do it, so they didn't use a registration system."
"The state is not dictating to hospitals how, we're not dictating to Carlos Migoya how he runs his operations here. That would be a total disaster, these guys are much more competent to be able to deliver healthcare services than a state government could ever be," DeSantis said.
Approximately 1.3 percent of the population of Florida has received a dose of the coronavirus vaccine, and the state has distributed the largest number of total shots of any state aside from California, with over 1.1 million shots distributed.
In total, nearly 1.4 million Floridians have tested positive for the coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic, and over 22,000 have died as a result. Deaths, however, peaked in August and the state has not experienced the same rapid surge seen in other states over the month of December as Governor DeSantis refuses to close the state's economy.
