Health Minister Patty Hajdu warned that those Canadians failing to abide by self-isolation measures could put civil liberties in jeopardy on Saturday, telling Canadians to following the public health guidelines put in place by the government.

Hajdu said she had "confidence" that Canadians would make it through the crisis, urging Canadians to work together to contain he novel virus, though she said Canadians need to take the measures "seriously."

"It makes governments have to look at more and more stringent measures to actually contain people in their own homes... Our freedoms around the measures that we're taking right now depend on people taking them seriously."

The government's guidelines include self-isolation for those who have recently travelled, or to those who could have potentially been exposed to the virus.

"I would encourage Canadians to think about that and to think about their obligation to act collectively right now," Hajdu urged. "Right now is your chance."

Confirmed cases of the virus have surpassed 1,200 nationally.
