Steven Guilbeault went after Conservative MP Rachael Harder after she questioned whether the minister's Bill C-10 would withstand an investigation into whether or not it violated Canada's Charter rights.
The tense moment comes just days after Harder put forward a motion during committee that there be further review on the bill.
"For bills like C-10, they're put through a sniff-test, which means that the justice department goes through them and decides whether or not they adhere to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms," said Harder. "... Experts say that we need a new evaluation from the justice minister to determine if C-10 respects the Charter. Does the Minister agree?"
Guilbeault responded: "I find it incredibly hypocritical that the member for Lethbridge (Harder) who given the opportunity would not hesitate one minute to remove women's right to choose. A right protected under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. But would like us and Canadians to believe that all of the sudden, she cares deeply about said Charter. I have rarely seen such hypocrisy."
"Unbelievable," MP Karen Vecchio could be heard saying immediately after Guilbeault finished speaking.
Bill C-10, spearheaded by Guilbeault, would "regulate the internet and social media in the same way that it regulates national broadcasting." When asked what the effects of the bill might look like, he stated that Canadians would see "more "indigenous storytelling" as well as content from "racialized community-owned media." He also said that the enforcement of his internet censorship bill must adhere to "the government's vision."
