White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked why Canada surpassed the United States in COVID-19 vaccinations and what can be learned from that fact.
Psaki started off by saying that "162 million Americans are now vaccinated." She also said that while that is a positive step, the Biden Administration has "long said that that's not enough."
"We need to ensure more people and more communities are vaccinated," added Psaki. She pointed out that some US communities have vaccination rates of 70 and 80 percent. However, there are other communities that have vaccination rates of 45 to 50 percent.
Psaki believes that low vaccination rates are an economic issue. Adding, "we've seen how that can impact local communities as it may lead to shutdowns of different businesses."
She briefly touched on Canada, saying "of course we work in close partnership with our neighbours, but we have 162 million Americans vaccinated." She added that the US is "the world's largest provider of vaccines to the global community.
As of today, 79 percent of eligible Canadians have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 57.5 percent are fully vaccinated. In America, 68 percent of eligible Americans are partially vaccinated, while 57.1 percent are fully vaccinated.
