Liberal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Karina Gould told CBC News' Power & Politics on Tuesday that American woman would have the option to come to Canada to seek abortion services.
Gould was asked, "will your government ensure that American women who want to, can come to Canada for an abortion."
"I don't see why we would not," Gould said to host Vassy Kapelos. "If they, people, come here and need access, certainly, you know, that's a service that would be provided."
"We want to make sure that we're still able to provide those services to Canadian women.
"One of the concerning factors is that there are many Canadian women who maybe don't live near a major city in Canada. They will often access these services in the United States... I'm very concerned about the leak yesterday... particularly for American women, but also for Canadian women," she said.
"Just on that last point," she continued, "... Canada has been a leader in championing and providing sexual health and reproductive services internationally."
The comments were made after news that the US Supreme Court could overturn Roe v. Wade.
Gould made the comments during an interview on expanding access to abortion for rural Canadians, something that the Trudeau Liberals have promised $45 million towards in the last budget.
