A minister at the Presbyterian New England Congregational Church (PNECC) suggested an alternative to the term "melting pot," which he deemed problematic.
According to the minister, the dated term should be replaced with "tossed salad." (ex. America is a tossed salad.)
The minister is apparently unaware of what a tossed salad is, or what it means to toss one's salad. The term is closely associated with a vulgar sex act which involves a willing participant performing an obscene act on another person's behind.
The minister likely meant to say that America is a "salad bowl," which is used a metaphor for the way a multicultural society can integrate different cultures while maintaining their separate identities, contrasting with a melting pot, which emphasizes the combination of the parts into a single whole. In Canada this concept is more commonly known as the cultural mosaic.
Wikipedia explains that in the salad bowl model, "different cultures are brought together—like salad ingredients—but do not form together into a single homogeneous culture; each culture keeps its own distinct qualities. This idea proposes a society of many individual cultures, since the latter suggests that ethnic groups may be unable to preserve their heritage."
