Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi critiqued President Trump for his failure to imagine the disastrous effect of the COVID-19 coronavirus on the American public and infrastructure, when in fact she failed to imagine the same thing.
On February 24th, Pelosi walked through San Francisco's Chinatown with a large entourage, encouraging locals to come down and join her. Pelosi said: “Come to Chinatown. Here we are. We’re careful, safe, and come join us.” She was more concerned with virtue signalling and combating “racism” than she was with securing the safety of Americans.
Earlier on Sunday, on with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Pelosi said “The president, his denial at the beginning, was deadly. His delaying of getting equipment to where it — his continued delay in getting equipment to where it’s needed is deadly. As the president fiddles, people are dying… The other day, when he signed the bill, he said 20 days ago everything was great, no it was not great, 20 days ago we had 500 cases and 17 deaths already.”
Pelosi fails to acknowledge her own behaviour. It was about 20 days ago when she could be seen in San Francisco, encouraging constituents to enjoy Chinatown, despite the looming threat of the virus. She was not the only Democratic political leader to flout the coming contagion. Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City completely ignored warnings, as did leadership in Seattle.
Pelosi was also opposed to Trump’s life-saving travel ban, stating on January 31st that “The Trump Admin’s expansion of its un-American travel ban is a threat to our security, our values and the rule of law.”
As we now know, isolating individuals from one another has nothing to do with identity politics, and everything to do with public health. While Pelosi bashes Trump for “fiddling” while “people are dying,” she is wasting time. Instead of performing her misplaced outrage on Jake Tapper, Pelosi should recognize her own failures before heaping accusations on others.
