WATCH: Poilievre demands answers from Trudeau Liberals on 'miserable results' during pandemic

"Now, an independent scientific study shows that Canada has the highest COVID misery index out of eleven countries... Why such miserable results?"

Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre took to the floor of the House of Commons on Tuesday to question the Trudeau government's coronavirus response.

"Dr. Richard Audas, health statistician and economist at Memorial University has published a COVID misery index, and the results for Canada are, well, miserable. In fact Canada ranks eleventh because of the government's poor performance on the health and economic side," Poilievre began. "With the worst deficit, the worst unemployment, and the worst vaccination rate in the G7, why is this government so miserable?"

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland responded to Poilievre's question, suggesting that the misery is confined to "the other side of the house."

"Let me share the great news of this house, that in the fourth quarter of last year, our GDP grew by nearly ten percent," Freeland continued, noting that this was higher than other major economies such as the United States and Germany.

"Excellent grades for Canadians, terrible grades for this government," Poilievre responded, arguing that Canada's growth is only higher because Canada had "far more ground to make up because our economic downfall was better."

"Now, an independent scientific study shows that Canada has the highest COVID misery index out of eleven countries... Why such miserable results?"

The COVID misery index, which as Poilievre said was developed by Dr. Richard Audas at Memorial University in Newfoundland, was released earlier this week and place Canada eleventh out of fifteen countries. While Canada performed better than Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, and France, Canada ranked lower than other major economies such as the United States and Germany.

"While Canada was spared the worst ravages of the disease, our response to it has brought significant misery, largely attributable to quite strong restrictions in behaviour and a lagging vaccination program," the study states.

"The economic misery has been severe, and the projections are that Canadian taxpayers will be paying this bill for some time to come."
