When pressed on COVID-19's origins by Fox News reporter Peter Doocy, White House press secretary Jen Psaki asserted that the Biden administration will continue to work "through the WHO" to place pressure on China.
"On COVID-19 origins, China has basically already said they think their part in an international investigation is done. So why is [National Security Adviser] Jake Sullivan still here saying he thinks it's possible that they're gonna provide the preliminary data at some point?" asked Doocy at the White House press briefing.
Psaki answered Monday: "I don't think we give up that easily. We are going to continue to press, in coordination with the international community, China to be transparent, to be forthcoming with data and information. We're not going to just stand by and accept that they've said they're not going to participate."
She noted that federal government is launching its own review, a topic of discussion as President Joe Biden heads overseas this week for the G7 summit.
Doocy asked Psaki to clarify what "pressing" means and what steps the White House is taking to pressure China. "We are engaging certainly at the highest levels and we'll continue to do that, whether it's the Secretary of State or other leaders who engage through national security, diplomatic conversations."
Psaki said that officials will continue to work through the World Health Organization and with international partners to exert pressure and ensure that China will release underlying data and participate in the second stage of the probe.
