At the House hearing on misinformation on Wednesday, Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA) argued that the media cannot be held accountable for the actions of single individuals, citing the 2017 congressional baseball game shooting.

"Anybody to try to suggest that discourse started getting out of control on January 6 would be disingenuous," Scalise asserted.

Scalise discussed his injuries sustained during the 2017 congressional baseball shooting, when a left-wing domestic terrorist open fired on congressmen.

"The gunman was motivated by hyper-charged rhetoric that he was hearing from the left, from prominent elected officials as well as media personalities," Scalise said.

Scalise provided as evidence a report from the FBI which describes the motivations the shooter had for attacking congressmen. "I enter that not to say that I blame those people that he mentions for his motivation, I say this to let you know that I don't blame those other people, I blame the shooter," Scalise said.

Scalise further suggested that politicians should be more willing to call out misinformation coming from both the left and the right no matter what their positions are.
