A snowboarder at Blue Mountain Resort in Ontario, Canada, was allegedly assaulted and detained by security personnel for not wearing a face mask while boarding a chair lift. A man in a blue parka, helmet, and goggles can be seen attempted to get on a chair lift when onlookers suggest he wear a mask.
The man tells the onlookers, who are filming as he does so, that he cannot hear them behind their face masks. "Why don't you put your mask on?" A man asks the snowboarder, and seems to threaten him as well. The incident occurred on February 1.
"I don't have to," the snowboarder says, "I'm exempt." As he turns around, a man in a security uniform, with a face mask, reaches out for him. "Don't put your hands on me," the snowboarder says.
The tumult holds up the line, and onlookers shout for it to move along as the security guard takes the snowboarders arms to try to pull him away from the lift. Onlookers shout "get him out!" And cheer the guards pulling the snowboarder away.
Another security guard moves in as well, and others in the crowd can be heard booing the security guards. "Don't touch me," the snowboarder says.
"Get your hands off him," says a woman who is standing waiting to board the lift as well, with three children. This appears to be the snowboarders family. She films the entire process, while telling the guards that the snowboarder is medically exempt.
"You're under arrest," the security guard says as the man tries to break free from their grasp. The tussle continues, with the guard reiterating that the snowboarder is "under arrest." This because the snowboarder was not wearing a face mask outdoors at a ski mountain.
The snowboarder pushes the guards off, spurring onlookers, on their skis and snowboards, to join in trying to detain the man. He is pushed to the ground between the chairs of the lift and held down.
Once the man is prone on the ground, more shouting from onlookers can be heard, with some in favor of the snowboarder and others pro-security and seemingly in favor of him being arrested and dragged off the mountain for not wearing a face mask.
The man was taken from the line at the chair lift as the woman filming the incident from the front can be heard to say "he's medically exempt and you're laying hands on him."
A child asks their mother if the man will be hurt, and the mother reassures him that this won't happen.
"You're breaking my rights as a Canadian citizen," the man says from the ground where security has him pinned.
"I'm medically exempt," the snowboarder says.
The person shooting the footage above laughs off camera and says "this is awesome. This went to a whole level of entertainment," he jokes with a woman. They both agree that this is the height of hilarity, and that's it's fun to see this confrontation in real life instead of just "on TikTok."
The guards do not remove his snowboard, strapped to one foot, while trying to cart him off. Onlookers causally discuss the best way to remove the man from the lift line. More people come in to try to get him away, while onlookers suggest removing his board.
Police arrive, and the woman tries to tell them again that the snowboarder is medically exempt. The woman and the children are all masked.
"It just escalated," says an onlooker, "this guy's gonna go away in cuffs."
The snowboarder unbuckles from his board and moves away after catching his breath. He is guided off by officers.
Blue Mountain's policy is that "Face masks / coverings are recommended at all times and required in lift lines and on the chairlift." A call to the resort revealed that they have set up an email to handle the slew of inquiries they received on Friday about the video, which is when it emerged on social media.
"We've been receiving a lot of calls about that this morning," a representative told The Post Millennial. So much so that the email press is directed to contact was established to handle these queries specifically.
Blue Mountain did not respond to a request for comment at the time of publication.
