Prime Minister Justin Trudeau thanked Erin O'Toole for his time as leader of the Opposition during Question Period of Wednesday.

O'Toole was voted out of his party after losing a leadership vote by his caucus, losing 73 to 45.

"I'd like to begin by recognizing the member for Durham [Erin O'Toole] and thanking him for his service," he said.

"There was a lot we don't agree on for the direction of this country, but he stepped up to serve his country, and I want to thank him for his sacrifice, and also, particularly, Rebecca, Molly, and Jack, for being part of what is a very difficult life for even the most successful of us."

New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh also gave a message to O'Toole via Twitter, saying again that while they disagreed on fundamental issues, that "all of us who choose politics go into it to try to serve our communities and our neighbours," and thanked him for his service to his party.

O'Toole's tenure as Opposition leader lasted 527 days—starting in August of 2020.
