Liberal Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau is condemning China for sentencing Canadian hostage Michael Spavor to eleven years in prison.

Spavor's detention, along with that of Michael Kovrig, had been widely accepted as a retaliation by the Chinese government for the arrest of Meng Wanzhou, the Huawei CFO, in what's been described as "hostage diplomacy."

"Canada condemns in the strongest possible terms" Michael Spavor’s "unjust conviction" in China, said Garneau. He also stated that Spavor intends to appeal the conviction as Canada seeks to gain clarity on the deportation order.
