In a compilation video shown in the US Senate on Tuesday, President Trump's defense attorney David Schoen played a selection of instances in which Congresspersons and Senators calls for Trump's impeachment—from the moment he took office in 2017.
"Denial of due process in this case," Schoen said, "of course starts with the House of Representatives. In this unprecedented snap impeachment process, the House of Representatives denied every attribute of fundamental Constitutional due process that Americans correctly have come to believe is part of what makes this country so great.
"How and why did that happen?" Shoen asked.
"It is a function of the insatiable lust for impeachment in the House for the past four years," he said, and then played a series of clips of Representatives calling for Trump's impeachment over and over and over again over the past four years.
"Impeach 45!" Maxine Waters calls from a stage, intoning her supporters to chant it as well, which they do.
Cory Booker, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jerrold Nadler, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Elizabeth Warren, and so many others called for Trump to be removed from office on television, in debates, at rallies, and in the House itself.
These representatives and senators were not content with one failed impeachment process, but felt the need to impeach again, even after Trump has been democratically voted out of the Oval Office.
Schoen went on to say that "the relevant timeline in the House reveals the rush to judgement. On the day following the January 6 riot, the house leadership cynically sensed a political opportunity to gain points against the outgoing then President Trump. And the Speaker demanded that Vice President Pence invoked the 25th Amendment."
Shoen later said that "they want to put you through a 16 hour presentation over two days focusing on this as though it were some kind of blood sport. And for what end? For healing? For unity? For accountability. Not for any of those. For surely there are much better ways to achieve each. It is surely for pure, raw, misguided partisanship, that makes them believe that playing to our worst instincts somehow is good."
"They don't need to show us movies to show that the riot happened here. We will stipulate that it happened, and you know all about it," Schoen said. "This is a process fueled irresponsibly by base hatred by these House managers and those who gave them their charge, and they are willing to sacrifice our national character to advance their hatred and their fear that one day they might not be the party in power."
