During an interview with Canadian college professor David Azerrad on "Tucker Carlson Today," the conservative commentator compared Canada's left-wing PM to the late Cuban communist politician Fidel Castro, who ruled a single-party authoritarian regime that caused a mass exodus of citizens from the country.
"Why should we stand back, and let our biggest trading partner, the country with which we share the longest border… why should we let it become Cuba?" Carlson asked, noting that he's "always loved Canada."
"Like, why don't we liberate it?" he continued, before juxtaposing the US's inaction towards violations of personal freedom in Canada to its participation in the war between Ukraine and Russia.
Free speech issues have been at the center of the human rights debate in Canada, as the government proposes bills to censor social media, streaming services, and other internet content.
In addition, the country's state-funded healthcare system, namely its Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) programs, have also come under criticism for being inhumane. This program provides assisted suicide, and put a provision in place—though it was put on hold until March 2023—to allow those with mental illness to seek state-sponsored suicide in relief from their ailments.
"We're spending all this money to liberate Ukraine from the Russians, why are we not sending an armed force north to liberate Canada from Trudeau? And I mean it," Carlson said.
He continued, saying that he is "completely in favor of a Bay of Pigs operation" in Canada, referencing the failed attempt by the US and Cuban exiles to overthrow Castro in 1961.
Azerrad responded, "I don't know that I'm there yet with you," to which Carlson laughed and said he was "talking himself into a frenzy."
