WATCH: White House blames Trump for Biden's border crisis

"After four years of an immigration system rooted in destructive and chaotic policies, President Biden is taking the challenge head on and building a fair, orderly and humane immigration system," Psaki said.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday, press secretary Jen Psaki took another opportunity to blame the Trump administration for the massive increase of migrants at the US-Mexico border. This despite the fact that it was the Biden administration that came into office with an open door policy for unaccompanied migrant youth, and talk of pathways to citizenship and amnesty for other illegal border crossers.

"I wanted to provide a brief update on the situation at our southern border. After four years of an immigration system rooted in destructive and chaotic policies, President Biden is taking the challenge head on and building a fair, orderly and humane immigration system, that's our objective," Psaki said.

"After coming into office, our administration immediately jumped into action to address the influx of migrants at the border, something that began during, and was exacerbated by the Trump administration.

"And we wanted to provide a couple of data, pieces of data, you may have seen but they've come out since the last time we had a briefing in here. At the end of March there were more than 5,000 children in Customs and Border Protection—patrol stations. Today that number is approximately 600.

"The amount of time children spend in CBP facilities is down 75 percent, from 131 hours at the end of March to under 30 hours now. And just yesterday the Department of Homeland Security announced that it will begin the process of uniting a number of families who were separated by the policies of the previous administration. Clearly we're not done, there's a lot of work ahead, migration is a dynamic and evolving challenge but the president has a plan and we're working on implementing it," Psaki concluded.

Migrants arrived at the southern border earlier this year wearing shirts begging the Biden administration to let them in, with the message "Biden, please let us in." Other migrants said specifically that they had come north because they thought that was the message being sent by the administration.

The influx of immigrants who have sought to cross the border illegally jumped exponentially from March to April. The border control facilities where migrants have been housed after crossing have been filled to overflowing. Children as young as three and five have been dropped over the top of the border wall by human traffickers making use of the administrations welcome policy for kids. Others have drowned trying to cross the Rio Grande, which separates the two nations. Some children have been rescued by CBP agents.

Border governors in Texas and Arizona have slammed Biden's border policies as being disorganized and chaotic, putting an undue burden on border towns and communities that are strained with the impact of the masses of new people.

Vice President Kamala Harris has since been tasked with sorting out the border situation, but she's yet to visit. She has blamed climate change for the crisis, along with anti-LGBTQ violence.
