WATCH: White House says keep kids masked until they're vaccinated

The question of whether to vaccinate children under 12-years-old or not has been ripe for debate since the vaccines were approved for the over 12 set. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that she is looking forward to getting her kids vaccinated.

"On COVID and vaccinations," Psaki was asked, "what does the administration say to parents who are hearing on one hand from the nation's top doctors that children and younger Americans are more vulnerable as these variants are spreading but at the same time many children can't get the vaccine?"

"Yeah," Psaki replied, "as a parent of children in that age bracket myself, it is challenging. What we are continuing to convey is we know it's been long, we know parents are exhausted and tired. But it's important to continue to abide by the public health guidelines, which means kids wearing masks in certain environments, not others.

"Obviously, you can look at the CDC guidelines to see what the specifics are. Obviously, we can't get ahead of the FDA process for approving vaccines. I know parents, like myself, are eager to vaccinate their children. Some also will have many questions, as we have seen, as the vaccine has become available for kids that are 12 and older, and that is also part of our process of engaging with pediatricians and with others to make sure those questions are answered," she said.

"We can't expedite the FDA approval process, what we can do is to continue to provide public health guidelines, make sure parents understand what it means if your kid is vaccinated or not vaccinated, even if it's because they are not eligible quite yet. And of course make sure we have resources and supply available if and when we reach that time," Psaki said.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, who the public has not heard much from since a trove of his emails were released to the public after FOIA requests, said in May that children should remain masked.

In an interview on CNN’s The Lead, hosted by Jake Tapper, Dr. Anthony Fauci said that American children still need to mask up until they get a coronavirus vaccine.

"What is your message to parents who are out there thinking, 'well, I'm vaccinated. My kids are not, but the odds of them getting the virus are very, very low. Would you tell them? No, no, no. The kids still need to wear a mask?'" Tapper asked Fauci.

"The children do when they're out there playing with their friends… in particularly in an enclosed situation, they do, but you know, one of the things that's also important that's happened most recently is the approval of vaccines for children, 12 to 15 years old," Fauci said.

Vaccines have not yet been approved by the FDA for use in children under 12.
