WATCH: White House will not 'rethink' plans for migrant kids despite families 'self-separating' at the border

Jen Psaki says that families "self-separating" at the border and sending their children across the border alone will not change administration policy of welcoming all migrant kids into the US.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked by a reporter during the White House press briefing on Thursday what the Biden administration's reaction is to migrant families "self-separating" at the border, and Psaki confirmed that this behavior would have no impact on border policy.

"Some of your own administration's own immigration... officials have said that some migrant families are, in their words, 'self-separating' at the border, and sending their kids across alone because they know that unaccompanied minors are not going to be turned away."

"Is it time to rethink that policy because of these unintended consequences and the way that people are kind of taking advantage of it?" Psaki was asked.

"Well you're right," Psaki replied, "that certainly is an unintended consequence, and we have been clear, and we have continued to convey the message that our border is not open, that it is a treacherous journey, and that even as families are doing that, a number of these kids are still in, are taking a very dangerous journey even for a shorter period of time, or distance, I guess I should say.

"But I don't have any, I don't think we have any intention to rethink our approach to treating kids humanely and ensuring that they are safe when they cross the border."

The Biden administration has had something of an open arms policy as regards children who approach the US-Mexico border. All of those unaccompanied minors who arrive are admitted, housed, and places sought for them with sponsors in the US. The increase in arrivals has been over 100 percent.

This policy has been met with a surge of children arriving on their own to the border, but at every step of the way, the administration has touted their humanitarian approach, denying any complicity their policy may have with human traffickers who are profiting greatly from this plan that ensures the border is open for all those minors who arrive.

Children have been found wandering alone and in tears, while others as young as five years old have been dropped over the border fence by human traffickers. The Biden administration policy has resulted in the fast expansion of border control facilities and proposed, multi-million dollar plans to house and care for migrants once they are in the US.

For a short period of time under the Trump administration, there was a policy of separating kids and parents as a draconian means of trying to thwart people from trying to make the crossing into the US. Now, it appears families are doing it on their own as a measure to ensure that their children gain entry, and the Biden administration is facilitating that practice.
