A shootout between a police officer and a driver in a Nashville parking lot left the police officer wounded and the driver dead, New York Post reports.
The incident, which was caught on Officer Josh Baker's body camera, began when the driver, Nika Holbert, was pulled over after Baker realized that her car's registered owner was wanted for several alleged drug offenses.
After being pulled over, Holbert lit a cigarette as the officer searched her bag. When the officer found what appeared to be marijuana and a white powdery substance, Holbert ceased to comply with police and got back in her car.
Baker tasered the woman as she refused to get out of the car. Refusing to surrender herself, Holbert grabbed a semiautomatic pistol from her car and shot at Officer Baker, striking him below his bulletproof vest.
Baker shot back at Holbert, fatally wounding the woman. While Holbert managed to drive away from the scene as Baker was injured on the pavement, leaving her pistol in the parking lot, it appeared she succumbed to her wounds before receiving any medical attention. She was pronounced dead at the hospital later that day.
Officer Baker survived the incident and is now in stable condition. "My thoughts and prayers are with Officer Baker and with the families of everyone involved," said Nashville Mayor John Cooper, who added that the incident shows how being a "police officer anywhere can be a dangerous job." Police spokesman Don Aaron said the shooting is currently being investigated.
