In the time between confederation and full independence, Canada adopted many flags. Like our territory, Canada’s flag continually evolved to symbolize new provinces and territories that had joined confederation.

But, after years of using various versions of the Red Ensign, Canada’s parliament recognized the need for a flag that represented an independent Canada; beginning the 40-year long Great Canadian Flag Debate.
