Prince William and Kate took to Twitter on Christmas morning to offer their best wishes to those who have faced loss and hardship in 2020, suggesting that Christmas does not feel like Christmas this year.
"This Christmas our thoughts are with those of you who are spending today alone, those of you who are mourning the loss of a loved one, and those of you on the frontline," the couple wrote on Twitter.
"Wishing a merry Christmas doesn’t feel right this year, so instead we’re wishing for a better 2021."
The Duke and Duchess also directed followers to a variety of UK charities, telling those who are struggling that "there is support available."
Prince Charles and Camilla made a similar gesture for Christmas, wishing their followers a "happy" Christmas instead of a "merry" Christmas, the traditional holiday greeting.
Indeed, 2020 has been a rough year for the United Kingdom, which has seen nearly 2.2 million cases of coronavirus and over 69,000 deaths as a result. The UK also recently discovered a new strain of coronavirus which appears to be more contagious than previous mutations, causing governments around the globe to shut down travel from the country in response.
